Home Treatment for Styes

If you've ever had a stye, you know how painful the condition can be. Caused by bacterial infections, styes generally form along the edge of the eyelid and look like tiny pimples. Styes can cause pain and swelling. They typically persist for a week.

Luckily, most people who get styes won't need prescription medication. Home treatment is generally sufficient. Here are some tips on treating styes:
  • Apply warm, damp washcloths to the eye several times a day.
  • Use an over-the-counter stye treatment. The pharmacist at your local drug store can recommend a good product.
  • Do not touch the stye or squeeze it.
  • Until the stye heals, do not wear contacts or eye makeup.

If your stye does not improve in a couple of days, seek medical treatment.
