Coping with Pinkeye

Pinkeye, also known as conjunctivitis, can be a painful condition. Caused by a variety of factors, including viruses, bacteria and toxins, pinkeye can cause redness of the eyes, pain, blurry vision, itching of the eye and more. Luckily, many cases of pinkeye benefit from home treatment.

There are a number of things you can do at home to reduce the symptoms of pinkeye. Try the following:
  • Do not wear contacts or eye makeup until your condition improves.
  • Apply cold or warm washcloths to the affected eye. However, never apply the same washcloth to different eyes, as this could spread the infection.
  • Thoroughly disinfect your contacts and contact case, if you wear contacts.
  • Wipe your eyes from the inside corner (next to your nose) to the outside.

Do not go to work or school until the infection has cleared.
